2023-06-07 On June 6, 2023, Ambassador Shen Cheng-Tsung, Director General of the Southern Taiwan Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, spoke at the National University of Kaohsiung (NUK) as part of the "Distinguished Lecture Series." The lecture focused on "Career Development Experiences," where he discussed his time in different overseas roles, such as Los Angeles, Sydney, and Saint Lucia. President Yueh-Tuan Chen also attended, expressing gratitude to Ambassador Shen for sharing his experiences.

Yueh-Tuan Chen expressed that NUK encourages students to cultivate interdisciplinary abilities alongside their academic pursuits. She highlighted that diplomacy emphasizes attentiveness, adaptability, and involvement in various areas such as politics, the economy, and international relations. This multifaceted engagement is an example of interdisciplinary abilities.

Shen Cheng-Tsung quoted numerous famous sayings to interpret diplomatic work. He also emphasized its diverse characteristics, stating that diplomacy can encompass any field, including public affairs, academia, cuisine, sports, and more. Diplomats must always be prepared to address any potential circumstances that may arise.

Shen Cheng-Tsung shared numerous diplomatic anecdotes, including his emergency trip to Saint Lucia in 2017, where he not only defused the aggressive "arson" campaign by China but also facilitated multiple visits by the Prime Minister of Saint Lucia to Taiwan. He also recounted successfully arranging a dinner between then-President Ma Ying-Jeou and former Los Angeles Mayor Antino Villaraigosa during the year 2014. In addition, he mentioned his assignment to the Southern Taiwan Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2022, where he entertained guests with a classic rendition of "New York, New York" during an evening with Mason Yu, the then-Director of the American Institute in Taiwan's Kaohsiung Branch.

He emphasized that despite the significant pressures faced by diplomats stationed abroad, they still feel honored to contribute their efforts to the nation.

Shen Cheng-Tsung obtained a master’s degree from the Graduate School of China–United States Relations at the Chinese Culture University and has also completed training at the Institute of Diplomacy and International Affairs. He also pursued studies at the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom. With a wealth of diplomatic experience, Shen has served as the Director of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Sydney, Ambassador to Saint Lucia, Executive Director of the Office of Parliamentarian Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and more. He currently holds the position of Director General at the Southern Taiwan Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
