2023-08-16 The first NUK Summer School in 2023 was opened on August 8 after nearly half a year of planning, and recruitment! More than 30 students from partner schools from Vietnam, Malaysia, Canada, Thailand, Japan, and South Korea came to the National University of Kaohsiung (NUK) to participate in the 8-day program, which includes courses centered around "Climate Governance and Sustainability," "Exploration of Taiwanese Culture," and "Mandarin Learning." The course is also open to the students from the NUK, looking forward to strengthening cultural exchanges between countries through activities.

In his opening speech, Wu Xinghao, Director of International Affairs, sincerely welcomed all participating students and shared with them the efforts of the NUK towards SDGs in the past few years. On the first day of the program, we were honored to have Professor Gracia Marin Duran, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Laws of University College London, deliver an engaging presentation on the development of the EU CBAM, the Paris Agreement, and the WTO legal compatibility.

Having Professor Thomas Schomerus from Leuphana Universität Lüneburg's Leuphana Law School as a speaker on the following day is truly a prestigious opportunity. Professor Schomerus holds the Professorship for Public Law, in particular on Energy and Environmental Law. We are privileged to have him deliver a speech addressing the development of renewable energy in the European Union and Germany.

During the activity, participants were actively engaged in discussions and discussed the challenges faced by their respective countries. Professor Schomerus emphasized that each country encounters different challenges in energy transition due to variations in geographical conditions, climate, population, and economic development levels. However, in the long term, from the perspectives of climate adaptation, energy independence, and cost-effectiveness, countries should remain committed to the development of alternative decarbonized energy sources and actively build policy frameworks to encourage and support these efforts.

The follow-up course activities included sessions on climate change-related topics, Chinese language learning courses, as well as off-campus visits to the National Museum of Taiwan History, Chimei Museum, a trip to Meinong and Qishan Old Street, and a visit to the Huisun Forest Recreation Area. Through this year's Summer School program, we hope that students will not only gain a better understanding of Taiwanese culture and international issues but also foster deeper exchanges between our university and our partner institutions.
