2023-09-25 The National University of Kaohsiung and the Kaohsiung-Pingtung-Penghu-Taitung Regional Branch of Workforce Development Agency jointly unveiled and inaugurated the "S-Corridor Technology Industry Talent Training Center" today(September 25th), making it one of the four major training centers in Taiwan. This initiative targets individuals aged 15 and above who do not have a background in engineering or related fields. It encourages them to enroll in pre-employment or on-the-job special job to accumulate semiconductor-related knowledge. Those who meet the eligibility criteria will receive full tuition waivers and an 8,000 NTD monthly learning incentive or a monthly living allowance of 15,840 NTD. By 2023, this program will likely cultivate around 70 new talents for the technology industry.

The training center is located on the 6th floor of the Library and Information Center at NUK. The unveiling ceremony was attended by Deputy Minister of Labor Chun-Yi Lee, Deputy Mayor of Kaohsiung City Ta-Sheng Lo, and President of the National University of Yueh-Tuan Chen. Several companies are participating in this program, including Advanced Semiconductor Engineering (ASE), Orient Semiconductor Electronics(OSE), Yageo Corporation, WinWay Technology, Taiflex Scientific, HYE Technology, Wistron Information Technology & Services, and Streber-Tech Co., Ltd. Delta Electronics also attended the event to express their support.

Deputy Minister of Labor Chun-Yi Lee stated that young people represent the country's future, and the government is responsible for enhancing their employability, which ultimately boosts the country's competitiveness. With the rapid development of 5G and AIoT applications, both of which rely heavily on semiconductors, the Ministry of Labor, in collaboration with the National University of Kaohsiung, established the "S-Corridor Technology Industry Talent Training Center." This initiative encourages individuals aged 15 and above, especially those at a career crossroads, to participate in training and enhance their skills, thus adding value to their prospects.

Kaohsiung City Deputy Mayor Ta-Sheng Lo commended the training center for its comprehensive understanding of the industrial landscape in Greater Kaohsiung and at the national level. He also acknowledged the efforts of Chen Chi-Mai's team, who have been promoting initiatives such as the semiconductor S-Corridor and the Yawan Smart Technology Park over the past three years. These efforts have attracted over 600 billion NTD in investment and created 30,000 job opportunities. The emphasis has been on quality and quantity, necessitating education and training. Through the collaboration of Kaohsiung University, the Ministry of Labor, and the business sector in nurturing talent, Taiwan's finest industry-academia cooperation system can be forged.

Chen-Ling Lai, Vice General Manager of Orient Semiconductor Electronics(OSE), expressed that the government's promotion of the S-Corridor has attracted more semiconductor-related companies to invest and establish themselves in the region, spanning from Qiaotou in the north to Pingtung in the south. With the increasing demand for talent, especially in Taiwan's leading semiconductor industry, they are pleased to actively participate in the programs initiated by the National University of Kaohsiung and the Ministry of Labor. These programs help businesses find outstanding talent and allow individuals from non-technical backgrounds to join the semiconductor industry through training, creating a win-win situation for all involved.

President of the National University of Kaohsiung, Yueh-Tuan Chen, highlighted that the university is strategically located at the heart of the S-Corridor, with a complete semiconductor industry ecosystem. Additionally, the university's special district has been thriving, making it the fastest-growing administrative region in terms of population migration in recent years. This provides a favorable environment for training and internships for program participants.

To better align with industry demands for talent, the university has established strategic platforms involving industry, government, and academia. These platforms focus on industry analysis, curriculum planning, and employment counseling. The goal is to nurture and retain talent for the semiconductor industry by closely addressing the needs and demands of the industry.

Yueh-Tuan Chen emphasized that Taiwan's semiconductor industry is a strategic sector, and the government is actively promoting the "Southern Semiconductor S-Corridor." NUK is committed to fulfilling its academic and societal responsibilities due to its central location in this corridor. It bridges the gap between industry and society by collaborating with the Kaohsiung-Pingtung-Penghu-Taitung Regional Branch of Workforce Development Agency to establish training centers. This initiative is akin to harnessing the power of a reservoir, continuously accumulating a pool of talent, and creating a win-win situation for industry, government, and academia.

The National University of Kaohsiung's "S-Corridor Technology Industry Talent Training Center" has launched the "Introduction to Packaging and Testing Training Program" starting today. This program is open to individuals aged 15 and above, regardless of their educational background or whether they have a non-engineering degree. The program will run from October 3rd to November 10th.
